The Universities of the Third Age are democratic,
self-funded organisations that provide all types of educational, creative and leisure activities for
retired people at minimal cost by making use of the knowledge and skills of
their members. Each U3A is essentially a co-operative of men and woman who meet
to share common interests and a desire to learn for its own sake. No
qualifications are required or awarded.
The South Tyneside U3A branch was
formed in May 2001 with 42 members. At the first meeting held at Westoe Rugby
Club in July 2001 this had increased to 120 members and an acting committee was
formed. Membership expanded rapidly and the branch moved to larger premises at
the Salvation Army Headquarters in
The
accent of the branch is on friendship, having fun and learning for pleasure
along the way in a relaxed and mostly informal atmosphere. Many groups have
been started by members with the ability and desire to share their knowledge
with other members having similar interests. These are well subscribed and meet
at various venues across the borough.
